Steve Huston's Drawing Workshop

Steve Huston was born and raised in Alaska.  He studied at Pasadena's Art Center college of Design, while working construction each summer to pay his tuition.  Even before graduating with his BFA, Huston began illustrating, for such clients as Caesar's Palace, MGM, Paramount Pictures and

Universal Studios among others.

After nearly a decade of doing commercial work, Huston decided a change was in order.  He began teaching life drawing and painting, composition and anatomy; first at his alma mater, then at the Disney, Warner Brothers, and Dreamworks Studios.  This allowed him the privilege of passing on the knowledge he had been given, while further honing his craft and seeking out new influences for the career he now envisioned.

Such influences came to include Titian and Rembrandt, the early American Tonalists, the homespun character of the WPA art projects, and the heroic and graphic power of the American Comic Book form.

1995 began his career as a fine artist, winning top prizes of the California Art Club Gold Medal Show that year and the following.  A string of gallery shows has followed, first in Los Angeles and then in New York and elsewhere.  Huston continues exhibiting his works widely.

Description of the workshop

“Three hour slide lecture will pertain to ways I have found to help stretch my imagination and the search to find my own individuality. My thinking on composition, design, color, edges, passages, and surfaces. My thought processes on beginning a painting and the pit falls once it is started. How to deal with frustration and how to bring a piece to a finish. How to broaden your choices within each subject for this is where individuality begins. The lecture will be interactive with the audience, for in the end it is all about sharing. A painting should tell as much about the painter as the subject he or she is painting. Never follow a truth that is not yours.”

“We are on the same journey, to find, unlock and value that which we already possess”

Joseph Todorovitch Painting Workshop

Joseph Todorovitch is a young contemporary painter who has developed a reputation for his highly representational figure paintings. Growing up in Southern California, he became interested in traditional drawing and painting at an early age. His training introduced him to many artistic influences including notable ateliers and instructors.
His work is a culmination of these forces with a deep respect for the knowledge and sensitivities of the past. Joseph has been able to sift through the vast amount of information, be selective, and utilize what's necessary to achieve an impact that speaks about a personal experience with his subjects. His paintings emote, and convey a care and sensitivity that is reminiscent of the naturalist painters of the 19th century. Utilizing subtle value and temperature shifts, fine draughtsmanship, and pure intuition, Joseph weaves a world of breathable air and psychological nuance in his work.
He has participated in many group shows including the 15th annual U.S. American Artists Fine Art Show in Pennsylvania; the Artist for the New Century assisted by Art of the West, Fine Art Connoisseur, Southwest Art, and Wildlife Art magazines; Ontario History Museum invitational; the Antiques and Fine Art Show at the New York Armory; and the Richard Schmidt Fine Art Auction 2005, 2006, 2007. Joseph is exclusively represented by the Wendt Gallery in Laguna beach and has recently been chosen one of twenty finalist for the 10th annual National Portrait Society of America's portrait competition.

Description of the workshop

We will paint a figure from life and discuss choices for setting up the pose, composition, color harmony, lighting, pacing, and bringing the painting to a decent level of resolve.  We’ll also discuss the language of describing paint in order to better understand our mixtures.  Joseph will explain his approach anddemonstrate by painting along and illustrating his ideas about the approach.  The workshop will consist of three six hour sessions in consecutive days.  Previous drawing experience is highly recommended.
